Welcome to Kathy Ann’s Farm, currently home to 5 sheep, 10 goats, 2 emus, ducks, chickens, dogs, cats, 4 kids of the human variety and a partridge in a pear tree!
After growing up in the middle of nowhere–really, there were corn fields and soybean fields in every direction–I swore I’d left the country life for good when I went away to college (far enough that I’d have a day’s advance notice if anyone decided to just ‘pop in’ for a visit). I guess though, you can take the farm girl off the farm, but you can’t take the farm out of the farm girl–or something like that. After years of living in apartments, townhomes, and crowded suburbia, I found myself longing for more space, more gardens, and yes, farm animals to take care of. Who would’ve thought? And make no mistake, they do take some caring for! We started small with just a few chickens. Well, before long, those few chickens were joined by a few more, some ducks, turkeys, emus–hey, why not?, a couple of goats…well, you get the picture.
One project morphed into another and now, we’ve become immersed in a simpler, cleaner lifestyle. I can’t remember the last time I bought eggs. With the goats, our milk bill was cut in half. I dabble in making cheese and luxurious goats milk soap and wonderful jams and jellies. I’m loving it and dream of the day when I can give up my daytime job to do this full time. I guess I really have come full circle.
